Fashion designer Stella McCartney is launching an international art project aimed at helping children in war-torn areas across the world.
The mother-of-four’s Draw Me to Safety project, which is a collaboration with charity War Child UK, was announced at yesterday’s Global Summit To End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London, where actress Angelina Jolie is speaking during the four-day event to highlight the issue of rape.
McCartney and War Child’s initiative will invite children aged eight to 15 in the UK and across the world to create artwork in answer to the question: ‘What makes you feel safe?’ The London-based designer will then create an exclusive product inspired by the submitted drawings, the proceeds from which will benefit War Child UK to help children in war zones.
“This project is about young people standing with children affected by conflict,” said McCartney. “Children see the world with clarity and honesty.”
Children from the UK and across the world will be invited to take part; be it refugees in Syria and Afghanistan, to those living in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic, where age is no barrier to rape. An online gallery will display the submissions and will display the differences and similarities between the work of the children.
McCartney and Jolie have recently become close collaborators in the world of fashion as the designer has created bespoke, spiky jewellery for the actress’s press tour for her Disney film Maleficent, as well as designing a children’s collection around the magical movie.
