AFTER years of realising other people’s dreams and imaginations through her work as an

Oscar-winning costume designer (the current gong count stands at three), Colleen Atwood -

one of Tinseltown’s best-loved and most highly regarded figures – has realised her own with her

debut bag collection.

“I have always loved beautiful leather objects, especially the detail that goes into designing them

both inside and out,” Atwood told us. “I took part in a philanthropic video series with Citizens of

Humanity last year and when they asked me what I would like to do next and I told them about

wanting to design a handbag line. They offered to help me bring it to life and I jumped at the

opportunity.”

Atwood is a master of her craft and, in a career that has spanned 20 years, her costume-designer

credits are a roll-call of cinematic masterpieces. Edward Scissorhands, The Silence Of The

Lambs, Little Women, Mars Attacks, Planet Of The Apes, Memoirs Of A Geisha, Nine, Mission

Impossible, Alice In Wonderland – the list goes on and on. With such experience under her belt,

Atwood’s inspiration for her first collection is naturally eclectic and varied.

“I am always looking for ideas, whether it is in art on the street or in my world travels,” she

explained. “It comes to me randomly and unexpectedly. The exposure I have had to beautiful

materials across the world from Japan to Italy, enables me to pull design ideas together. This,

combined with years of historical research has created a great fountain of ideas for me.”

This approach shows in her designs. Her first collection exudes classic charm, contrasted by quirky

accents by way of colour-pop ponyskin finishes – an aesthetic that Atwood has honed to have wear-
anywhere appeal.

“I think that this collection will be great for the busy women of today,” she said. “The bags go

from day to evening easily and are elegant in both colour and style. They are for women who are

combining family, career, and a bit of fun. They are for people who love luxury and understated

style.”

The collection does not, however, herald the end to her costume-designing days – she is about to

begin work on Tim Burton’s Through The Looking Glass, the sequel to Alice in Wonderland. With

designs like these though, we predict it won’t be long before Colleen Atwood starts on a sequel of

her own.
